Anaphylactic shock after liposuction at an unlicensed cosmetic facility

The woman went to Kim An Beauty Salon to have belly fat removed, then became drowsy and had to go to the emergency room because the authorities discovered that this place was not licensed and the medical staff only had an 8th grade education.

On October 25, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health Tang Chi Thuong said a special working group came to inspect this place, after Emergency Center 115 reported that a patient was suspected of having anaphylactic shock after abdominal liposuction. The beauty salon is located at 148C Tran Quang Khai, Tan Dinh ward, district 1.

This place does not have a medical examination and treatment operating license. It was only granted a business registration certificate by the Department of Planning and Investment on July 10, 2024 with the business line “activities of general and specialized clinics.” and dentistry; hair cutting, shampooing; skin care; tattooing, tattooing, embroidery on the skin (do not use injectable anesthetics).

The patient arrived at the facility on the afternoon of October 22, and was received by a staff member who had only completed the 8th grade and had no medical degree. He weighed and measured his fat condition and advised him to perform abdominal liposuction cosmetic surgery for 30 million. , order rapid blood sugar test, rapid HIV test, urine test. The patient paid 17 million VND and had an employee without a medical degree perform the test and read the test results.

The patient had abdominal liposuction surgery by a man on the 5th floor, starting at 6:00 p.m. and ending around 8:30 p.m. Then, discovering that the patient was drowsy and had slow contact, family members had a fight with facility staff and called Tan Dinh Ward Police. The police came to investigate and contacted Emergency Center 115 to take the patient to Gia Dinh People’s Hospital for treatment.

The inspection team requested the facility owner to provide professional qualifications and practice licenses of the man who performed liposuction surgery and the performing crew. However, the facility owner could only provide a phone number, and when he called, the surgeon did not answer the phone. The facility said it has submitted an application to the Department of Health requesting a license to operate a specialized cosmetic clinic under Kim An Beauty Salon Co., Ltd., pending appraisal.

The competent force has drawn up a record of sanctions against the facility for providing medical examination and treatment services without an operating license, suspending the staff for 18 months from participating in medical examination and treatment without a practicing certificate.

The Department will transfer the file to the Ho Chi Minh City Police to investigate and clarify and handle illegal cosmetic acts that cause serious consequences to people’s health, show signs of assaulting people, and avoid causing accidents.

Abdominal liposuction is not a minor surgery but is classified as a major surgery. Normally, abdominal liposuction must be performed in a hospital with a standard operating room, with an anesthesiologist to monitor, support and control. Before liposuction, customers must have a general health check and complete testing. Absolutely not performed in a beauty salon.

Liposuction can cause drug shock, anaphylactic shock, poisoning, fat embolism… even death if not treated promptly. Fat embolism often occurs because the liposuction process is prolonged, blood vessels are damaged, microvessels dilate, fat cells are sucked back into the blood vessels, travel throughout the body, and if they reach the brain, it can cause a stroke. stroke, into the heart causing heart failure, into the lungs causing edema and death.

In April, a 64-year-old woman fell into a coma after two days of liposuction, excess eyelid skin removal, and breast implant replacement. She was treated for more than a month but did not survive. Previously, a 70-year-old overseas Vietnamese woman stopped breathing after facelift surgery. Doctors coordinated many intensive resuscitation measures such as dialysis and ECMO intervention, but her condition was too severe and she died on March 15. .
