Lung damage reduces airflow and oxygen levels, potentially leading to fatigue, shortness of breath, persistent cough, and prolonged cough with mucus.
The lungs are protected by the rib cage. If this part is injured or subjected to external force, fluid can leak into the lungs. When this happens, the lungs cannot supply the body with enough oxygen, leading to a number of typical symptoms.
Wheeze
Wheezing similar to a high-pitched whistle is one of the early signs of lung damage. Because the airways are narrowed, it makes it difficult for air to get in and out of the lungs, causing a whistling sound. People with this condition should regularly see a doctor to check lung function.
Cough with frequent phlegm
Coughs with phlegm are often related to allergies or infections. Persistent symptoms may indicate a more serious problem. The lungs make mucus to keep dead cells, debris, and bacteria out of the airways. Overproduction or hypersecretion can occur due to lung dysfunction, infection, irritation, or waste products in the respiratory tract.
Shortness of breath even without exertion
It’s normal to feel short of breath after intense exercise. However, feeling short of breath when performing daily tasks that do not require exertion is a sign of illness. The lungs can begin to lose elasticity over time, making it more difficult to expand and contract, making it difficult to absorb enough oxygen.
Unable to take deep breaths
Reduced lung capacity can also cause shortness of breath or feeling like you can’t take a deep breath. Deep breathing becomes more difficult as the muscles around the lungs gradually lose strength. Patients also feel uncomfortable when there is not enough air to breathe.
Easily exhausted even though not tired
When lung function decreases, the body needs more energy to perform physical activities. Aging lungs also make people feel exhausted when performing simple activities such as climbing stairs. It also increases feelings of weakness and fatigue, especially when doing things that previously felt simple.
Tightness in the chest
Chest pain, increased pressure or mild tension in the chest, especially during exertion, can also warn of unhealthy lungs. The cause is often due to aging, causing the lungs to not be able to breathe air as easily as before, losing strength and flexibility.
Aging also weakens the body’s immune system response, making the lungs more susceptible to damage. If the lungs are exposed to pathogens and environmental toxins, the risk of cancer and respiratory disease increases.
