Keep your body warm to avoid colds, clean your nose and throat daily, wash your hands regularly, increase resistance, and contribute to preventing nose and throat diseases when the weather changes.
Prolonged cold rain, falling temperatures, and high humidity create conditions for bacteria and viruses to thrive in the air, increasing the risk of respiratory diseases such as pharyngitis, laryngitis, rhinosinusitis… MSc.BSc.CKI Truong Tan Phat, Head of Ear, Nose and Throat Unit, Tam Anh General Clinic, District 7, shows some ways below to prevent nose and throat diseases in the rainy season.
Keep your body warm when the weather gets cold, especially when going out in the evening or early morning. If you get wet in the rain, dry your body, dry your hair, rest when you get home to stabilize your body temperature, and then take a shower. Prioritize warm foods and drinks such as tea, soup, and porridge to keep the body warm.
Clean your nose and throat Daily with physiological saline helps remove dirt, reduce the risk of irritation, and clear the airways. Salt water also helps reduce edema and swelling of the nasopharyngeal mucosa.
Personal hygiene by washing hands before eating, after going to the toilet, when sneezing or coming into contact with many people, especially sick people. Avoid rubbing your eyes, nose, mouth or wiping sweat with your hands. Use a clean towel or handkerchief to wipe your eyes and nose when needed. When going out or in crowded places, wearing a mask helps prevent viruses from spreading through the respiratory tract.
Clean the living environment clean, keep the house dry, avoid moisture to prevent bacteria from growing and attacking the respiratory system.
Drink enough water Helps maintain stable body temperature and eliminate toxins in the body. During the rainy season, people should drink warm water to moisturize the throat and dilute phlegm. Adults drink 1.5-2 liters of water. People who work in the sun, in high temperatures, or play sports regularly may need to drink more.
Increase resistance for the body, enhancing the immune system, reducing the risk of pathogens from viruses and bacteria attacking. Increase resistance by prioritizing fresh fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins A, E, C and B, antioxidants, and minerals.
Exercise every day Promotes the body to release energy and convert it into heat, fighting cold weather. Regular physical activity about 30-60 minutes a day helps increase resistance.
Get enough sleep to restore the body after a long day, increase resistance, and fight pathogens. The recommended sleep time for the average adult is 7-9 hours per night.
Limit drinks containing alcoholdo not smoke because they easily irritate the respiratory mucosa, causing inflammation leading to itchy throat, sore throat, and cough. Alcohol also dehydrates the body, which causes the immune system to weaken.
Dr. Phat recommends that everyone be fully vaccinated, especially flu and pneumonia vaccines to reduce the risk of disease. Adults with symptoms of high fever over 39 degrees Celsius that do not decrease after using fever-reducing medication, difficulty breathing, or cough lasting more than 10 days should see a doctor. If young children and the elderly have an illness that lasts more than three days without improvement… they should see an ENT doctor immediately.
