Sleep expert Rex Isap recommends that people should not drink coffee immediately after waking up but should wait an hour later to get the most benefits of this beverage.
Many people think that a cup of coffee will help them stay alert and energetic. However, drinking coffee too early can interfere with sleep.
A new study by Breville reveals that Britons drink three cups of coffee a day, and the time they usually drink their first cup is 7am. Therefore, sleep expert Rex Isap at Happy Beds recommends that people drink coffee one hour after this time.
“During the day, the brain produces a chemical called adenosine, which promotes sleep. The longer you stay awake, the more this substance accumulates and helps you feel sleepy,” Rex Isap said, further explaining that Caffeine blocks adenosine receptors, keeping us awake.
However, when we wake up, cortisol levels (usually associated with stress) are at their highest, promoting alertness. “So drinking caffeine when cortisol levels are already high could be counterproductive or even cause you to increase your tolerance to caffeine,” he explains.
Therefore, experts say that if you change the time you drink coffee, you can sleep better and have more energy.
