Stroke while playing sports

Playing pickleball for about 15 minutes, the 55-year-old man suddenly became dizzy, collapsed, lost consciousness, was given cardiopulmonary resuscitation by Emergency Department 115 and then taken to Hospital E.

On December 3, Dr. Tran Anh Thang, Deputy Director of Hanoi Emergency Center 115, said that when the emergency team arrived at the scene, the patient had a cardiac arrest and stopped breathing. The team resuscitated the patient on the spot for 20 minutes. When the patient’s circuit was temporarily restored and he was out of danger, the emergency team took him to Hospital E for treatment.

The doctor diagnosed the patient with a stroke and is currently being monitored in the Intensive Care Department.

Sports are good for health if played properly and appropriately. Doctors recommend that when exercising, you should pay attention to symptoms that warn the body that it is about to stop, such as headaches, dizziness, vomiting, unusually heavy sweating, rapid heart rate, and muscle stiffness. (cramps)… Patients with blood pressure problems or cardiovascular disease are susceptible to stroke if they exercise too hard.

Signs of stroke can be recognized early through the “BE FAST” rule, as follows:

B (Balance): Sudden loss of balance, dizziness, severe headache and loss of coordination.

E (Eyesight): Blurred vision (decreased vision) or complete loss of vision in one or both eyes.

F (Face): Facial changes, the patient may have paralysis, mouth distortion, philtrum (the segment connecting the point under the nose to the upper lip) is misaligned, most clearly shown when opening the mouth wide.

A (Arm): Difficult or impossible to move limbs, paralysis on one side of the body. The quickest way to confirm is to raise both hands and hold in this position at the same time.

S (Speech – voice): Difficulty speaking, unclear pronunciation, stuck words, unusual lisp. Test by asking the person suspected of having a stroke to repeat a simple sentence.

T (Time): Quickly call 115 or take the patient to the nearest medical facility for timely emergency treatment.
