The world population will reach 8.09 billion people in early 2025

The report said the global population growth rate of 0.9% in 2024 has slowed compared to 2023. Before that, the global population increased by an average of 75 million people per year. It is expected that in January 2025, every second the world will have 4.2 births and 2 deaths.

In the US, the population will increase by 2.6 million people in 2024, reaching 341 million people in early 2025. On average, there will be a birth every 9 seconds, a death every 9.4 seconds, and every 23.2 seconds an immigrant enters the workforce. Thanks to a combination of births, deaths and immigration, the US population increases by one person every 21.2 seconds. From 2020 to now, the US population has increased by nearly 9.7 million people, equivalent to 2.9%.

Record low birth rate in Vietnam

Vietnam’s Ministry of Health forecasts that the birth rate in 2024 will reach 1.91 children/woman, the lowest level in history, contrary to the trend of many births in beautiful years like the Year of the Dragon. Over the past two decades, low fertility has been concentrated in urban areas, ranging from 1.7 to 1.8 children/woman. In 2024 alone, fertility in urban areas will decrease to 1.67 children/woman, while in rural areas it will reach 2.08 children/woman.

The decline in birth rate in Vietnam is similar to many Asian countries such as Japan, Korea and China, where governments are trying to solve the problem of aging populations.

Japan and South Korea face aging populations

In Japan, the number of newborns in 2024 is estimated to decrease to 690,000, below the 700,000 mark for the first time since 1899. From January to October 2024, the country recorded more than 603,000 babies born, a decrease of 4.9 % compared to the same period last year.

Korea officially enters a period of super-aging population, when the number of people over 65 years old will account for more than 20% of the total population of 51 million by the end of 2024. The proportion of elderly people in Korea has increased rapidly since the late 1980s. , while the birth rate decreased sharply. If this trend continues, elderly people will account for 25.3% of the population by 2030 and 40.1% by 2050.

China is trying to increase the birth rate

The population over 60 years old in China will reach nearly 297 million people in 2023, accounting for 21.1% of the total population, of which the group over 65 years old is 216.76 million people, equivalent to 15.4%.

In October 2023, China launched a nationwide survey, focusing on rural areas and small towns, to find out why people hesitate to have children. China’s State Council also announced a series of measures to encourage childbirth, including expanding childbirth insurance for migrant workers.

According to the United Nations, birth rates in many countries have decreased due to economic instability, political instability, and women’s access to education and the labor market. Restrictions on immigration in places like Europe and a temporary drop in life expectancy due to the Covid-19 pandemic have also contributed to the situation.
