China reassures the world about a Covid-19-like epidemic

In recent days, images and videos on social networks have shown that hospitals in China are overloaded due to cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) infection. This is one of the common causes of respiratory infections, especially in young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems. The disease has flu-like symptoms, raising fears of another health crisis after Covid-19.

However, Beijing reassured the community about the severity of the situation, considering this an annual winter phenomenon. On January 4, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said respiratory infections usually peak at this time of year.

“The Chinese government cares about the health of its citizens and tourists. Tourism in my country is still safe,” said Ms. Mao.

When asked about overcrowding at hospitals and reports of increased respiratory diseases, she said people’s symptoms were less severe and the scale of spread was smaller than last year. She also urged residents and visitors to refer to the guidance of China’s National Disease Control and Prevention Administration.

The spike in respiratory illnesses across China in the past few days is reminiscent of similar outbreaks during the Covid-19 era. Media from neighboring countries such as Indonesia, India and Japan also advised citizens to pay attention to the situation and take necessary precautions.

HMPV causes flu-like symptoms, which can lead to severe respiratory problems, especially in children and vulnerable groups. Viruses cause upper and lower respiratory tract infections. The disease was first discovered in 2001, but there is no vaccine to prevent it.

Symptoms of HMPV are similar to the flu, including: cough, fever, nasal congestion and difficulty breathing. However, in severe cases, the virus can lead to complications such as bronchitis or pneumonia. Depending on the severity of each case, the incubation period lasts from three to 7 days, and full recovery may take some more time.

HMPV is spread through the air as well as through close contact, when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The virus remains active on the surface of objects at room temperature, so touching the object also makes people sick.

HMPV and Covid-19 are both respiratory diseases and lead to cough, fever, nasal congestion, sore throat and difficulty breathing. Both are spread through respiratory droplets.
