AI helps diagnose dementia by checking vision

Researchers are developing a new tool using artificial intelligence, which the optulists will be able to use to detect early signs of dementia, BBC reports.

A group of Neureye researchers, which is headed by the University of Edinburgh, collected almost a million eyes of the eyes received from optics throughout Scotland, which became the world’s largest set of data of this type. Using artificial intelligence, scientists have developed an algorithm that analyzes the state of blood vessels of the eyes, which can help in identifying neurodegenerative diseases, for example, dementia.

The database can be used to analyze photographs taken during standard eyes. In the future, doctors will be able to use it both to prevent diseases and for diagnosis at an earlier stage than it is possible today.

Due to the fact that the blood vessels in the eyes are very small and thin, images of the retina located on the back of the eye can provide information about the condition of the brain. Using the software using artificial intelligence to process these data, scientists will be able to identify signs of the disease before the appearance of the first symptoms.
