8 drinks to reduce heat shock when traveling for Tet

Juice from watermelon, cucumber, pomegranate, and mango is rich in vitamin C and fiber, contributing to strengthening resistance and reducing heat stroke when traveling.

During Tet days, the South has high and dry temperatures, while the North is cold and humid, increasing the risk of heat stroke during outings. This is a state in which the body suddenly changes temperature, from cold to hot or vice versa. This change causes the body to spend a lot of energy to regulate its body temperature, reducing resistance and easily causing dangerous reactions.

MSc.BS. Le Thi Thu Ha, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, advises each person to prepare sun protection tools such as hats, umbrellas or jackets when going out. Drinking water regularly and maintaining a scientific diet with foods rich in vitamins and minerals such as fresh fruits and vegetables helps reduce the risk of heat stroke.

Watermelon juice: Watermelon is one of the foods with high water content, about 92%. Watermelon juice helps rehydrate, stimulates the release of excess sweat, and prevents heatstroke. However, because watermelon has a high glycemic index (GI) of 75, people with diabetes or sugar metabolism disorders should limit its use.

Cucumber juice: Cucumbers contain up to 95% water, are low in calories, and rich in vitamin C – a powerful antioxidant that protects the skin from the harmful effects of ultraviolet rays. Cucumber juice not only cools the body but also supports skin health.

Mango juice: Mango provides protein, vitamins A, B6, C, iron, folate, magnesium and fiber. A glass of mango juice or mango smoothie can provide 50% of the daily amount of vitamin C needed, contributing to strengthening resistance and cooling the body.

Pomegranate juice: This drink has a lot of water and the antioxidant punicalagin, which contributes to eliminating toxins, increasing metabolism, and supporting the body against heatstroke.

Coconut water: Provides natural minerals such as sodium, potassium, magnesium to help maintain water and electrolyte balance in the body. Coconut water is also rich in vitamins, protecting the body from the effects of heat and dryness.

Green bean juice: Green bean water contains many beneficial nutrients, has the effect of clearing heat, detoxifying and reducing the risk of heat stroke on hot days.

Tamarind juice: Vitamins, minerals and electrolytes replace nutrients lost due to dehydration. A glass of tamarind juice soothes the feeling of heat and adds energy to the body.

Lemonade: A glass of diluted lemon juice provides vitamin C, which not only quenches thirst but also aids digestion and strengthens the immune system. Drinking lemon water brings a cool feeling to the body on days with erratic weather.

According to Dr. Ha, drink choices need to be suitable for each person, avoiding types that cause dehydration such as coffee, alcohol, and soft drinks. In erratic hot and cold weather conditions, pay attention to protecting the health of children, pregnant women, and the elderly.

Maintaining a balanced diet and drinking enough water and electrolytes helps ensure health during your trip. During travel, each person should drink 2 to 4 glasses of water per hour and ensure total water consumption is at least 2-2.5 liters per day. Drink water slowly in sips, avoid too fast or using water that is too cold to not shock the digestive system.
