A patient with an incurable immune disease is in remission after artificial intelligence discovered a medicine that saved his life.

The patient who participated in the study of the University of Pennsylvania suffers from an idiopathic multicentric disease of Castleman (IMBK), a low level of survival and a limited number of available treatment methods. The tool based on artificial intelligence analyzed 4,000 existing drugs and revealed that the adalimumab – a monoclonal antibody used to treat diseases such as arthritis and Crohn’s disease – can be effective in the case of a study participant.

Before the beginning of the experiment with Adalimumab, the patient was heading to the hospice, since numerous methods of treatment over time were ineffective. However, after the use of the medicine that scientists have used in the treatment with the help of AI, the man has been in remission for two years.

The process of applying an existing drug for the treatment of diseases other than those for which it was originally developed is called re -use of the drug. Despite the fact that different diseases can manifest itself in different ways-in symptoms, prognosis or causes-they may have general mechanisms in the body, such as similar genetic mutations or molecular triggers, which allows the use of the same drug for their treatment.

In the future, scientists who conducted the study intend to use the possibilities of artificial intelligence to analyze huge amounts of data in order to identify already approved drugs that can become potential treatment for people with rare diseases.
