Mr. Marcelino Abad Tolentino, 125, in Peru, maintained health thanks to a clean diet, naturally cultivated and optimistic spirit.

Mr. Marcelino Abad Tolentino, intimately known as “Mashico”, 125 years old, currently lives in a nursing home in Huânuco. Specifically is considered the most long -life Peruvian man as well as in the world.

Born in 1900 in the small village of Chaglla, Huânuco, Marcelino witnessed more than a century of historical transformation. The health and lucid of Marcelino is thought to be thanks to a natural diet and optimistic spirit. He often eats fresh fruits, vegetables and lamb from his garden, called the “Garden of Eden”.

A special feature of Marcelino’s diet is chewing Coca leaves, a traditional custom of the Andean. He started this habit when working on farms to enhance energy and health. According to a study, the Andean used Coca for a century to improve physical.

This study conducted over 10 healthy adult men in Cajamarca (Peru, height of 2,700 m). They were chewing 8 g of coca leaves with a little lime, then cycling for 20 minutes. Blood pressure, oxygen saturation, pulse, electrocardiogram and VO2 Max (measurement of the body’s maximum absorption and use of oxygen in the movement process) are monitored. The results show that chewing coca leaves beneficial during exercise and prolonged effects during physical activity.

Misael Ayra, who promoted the Pensión 65 social program in Huânuco, said that Marcelino consumed natural products to help him stay healthy. “Whenever we visit him before he entered the nursing home, he gave us fruit from the garden. It was like a source of life,” he said.

Although unable to walk on its own, Marcelino still likes to walk with a wheelchair every day. The health of the instrument is considered stable. Despite losing his parents when he was 7 years old due to drowning when he crossed the Huallaga River, he learned how to adapt and live independently.
