Muji recalls 600,000 bottles of room spray due to bacterial contamination

Ryohin Keikaku Group, Muji’s parent company, announced an emergency recall of about 600,000 room spray products due to the discovery of bacteria during the production process.

The recall applies to 11 products in the “Room Fragrance Spray” line, including scents such as Woody and Green, sold since September 2024. Kyodo News delivered on October 30. The cause was determined to be inadequate hygiene management at the production line, leading to contaminated products.

According to Muji, the detected bacteria are common strains in everyday living environments, with a very low risk of harming users’ health. To date, the company has not recorded any cases of customers experiencing health problems related to the product. However, Muji still decided to recall the entire shipment to ensure absolute safety for consumers. It is unclear whether the recalled products are sold in countries outside Japan.

In addition to 11 types of room sprays, all other products produced at the same factory are also subject to recall to prevent risks. The company confirmed that other product lines such as essential oils and diffuser oils are not affected.

People using the above batch of goods are advised to stop using them immediately. Muji supports full refunds through three forms: register on the company’s website, call the hotline, or bring the product directly to the nearest Muji store without a receipt.

“We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and worry caused,” representative Ryohin Keikaku said in a press release. The group is also committed to reviewing the entire production process, strengthening hygiene standards and quality control to prevent incidents from recurring.
