New generation robots support surgeons in 120 types of pathologies

The Da Vinci Xi robot supports surgeons in treating cancer and many complex diseases of urology, obstetrics and gynecology, and digestion, increasing success rates and reducing complications.

Da Vinci Xi robot is the 4th generation robot of Intuitive Surgical (USA). Currently, the world has more than 9,100 Da Vinci surgical robot systems present in more than 71 countries, more than 14.2 million surgeries have been performed. In Southeast Asia, about 59 robots are operating in countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, and Indonesia.

Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City put the Da Vinci Xi robot into operation in May. This is the first most modern robot in the southern region, according to Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Le Chuyen, Director of the Center for Urology – Nephrology – Andrology.

Most diseases treated with laparoscopic surgery can be performed using the Da Vinci robot. The system has so far performed more than 120 types of cancer surgery such as prostate, bladder, cervical, colorectal, hepatobiliary, kidney, thyroid cancer, along with complex diseases of the abdomen – pelvis, chest and urinary tract… Da Vinci Xi robot helps complex surgeries take place safely, accurately and with less pain.

“Thanks to the ability to operate in narrow cavities, Da Vinci Xi is likened to the doctor’s ‘extended hand’ in laparoscopic surgery,” Associate Professor Chuyen explained. The robot is equipped with a 3D camera system with 10-15 times magnification and a robotic arm that rotates 540 degrees, dissecting, cutting, and suturing tissue with super precision in areas that were previously almost inaccessible with open surgery or classic laparoscopic surgery.

Surgery with robots is minimally invasive, so patients undergo gentle surgery, with small incisions, almost no scars, little blood loss, reduced complications, reduced post-operative pain, shortened hospital stay while maximally preserving urinary, sexual, reproductive or motor functions.

After 7 months of operating the Da Vinci Xi robot, doctors at Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City have performed nearly 200 surgeries on Urology, Thoracic – Vascular Surgery, Digestion, and Obstetrics and Gynecology. Most are complex surgeries, no cases of complications or serious complications after surgery have been recorded, the average hospital stay is only 2-7 days.

Associate Professor Chuyen believes that the Da Vinci Xi robot with new technological breakthroughs in supporting early-stage cancer surgery and complex diseases contributes to improving treatment quality and reducing the cancer burden in Vietnam.
