6 simple ways to reduce headaches

Drinking water, twisting, applying cold or warm compresses to the head and nape can relax blood vessels, increase oxygen to the brain, and prevent headaches.

Some uncommon causes of headaches include eating too much salt or sugar, or heat stroke. In these cases, lifestyle adjustments, drinking fluids, or applying cold compresses can help relieve pain.

Hot compresses, steam baths

Hot packs and saunas soothe tense muscles and increase blood flow to the brain. Regularly soaking your feet in a hot bath and adding a little ginger also helps. If you have any cuts, sores or any problems with feeling hot (or cold) do not use this.

Apply a cold compress to your head

Applying cold or ice around the head area can relieve pain. Ice numbs the painful area and reduces inflammation. However, you should not put ice directly on your head because it can easily cause cold burns. You should put a cold towel or use ice in several layers of towels, moving around the painful forehead, nape, and head area for 5-10 minutes. Do not apply the compress to one place for too long to limit damage.

Drinking water

If your headache is caused by dehydration or heatstroke, drinking water or electrolytes can replenish fluids to help your body function normally. You should drink filtered water, fruit juice, and prioritize drinking soup with meals or herbal tea. You should not drink alcohol or caffeinated drinks when you have a headache because it can easily make dehydration and make your headache worse.

Remove the hair tie

Headaches can occur due to tying your hair too tightly. The hair tie stretches the hair and stimulates the pain. In this case, remove the hair tie or choose other simpler hairstyles such as braids or light ties. Brushing your hair back with your hands or using regular stretching and massage movements can also reduce migraines and reduce stress.

Furrow your eyebrows

Pucker your eyebrows in for 3-5 seconds then relax them out, do this continuously for 5-10 minutes, at the same time use your fingers to rotate your temples. This procedure interrupts the trigeminal nerve (the largest nerve in the skull). It acts as a conduit between the face, brain and nerve endings located in the eyebrow area, contributing to the reduction of tension headaches.

Twist yourself

Yoga helps reduce pain by combining movement and regular breathing. Some twisting movements in yoga or sitting with your neck stretched high, curling up your body relaxes your muscles, making you comfortable and relaxed, thereby reducing headaches.

Some other tips that headache sufferers can try include drinking a cup of ginger tea to add anti-inflammatory properties and control nausea. Essential oils such as peppermint, rosemary, lavender and basil can have a calming effect when applied topically or inhaled. Get enough rest and sleep to help your brain rest.
