Most of the world doesn’t get enough omega-3s

More than three-quarters of the world’s population does not have enough omega-3 fatty acids, according to new research from the University of East Anglia, the University of Southampton and Holland & Barrett. The analysis found that 76% of the world’s population does not meet recommended intake levels of EPA and DHA, highlighting a serious global public health problem.

This study was the first to review national and international omega-3 intake recommendations for healthy people at all stages of life. Omega-3s play an important role in maintaining health throughout life: they reduce the risk of premature birth, promote the development of vision and cognitive functions in infants, and strengthen the cardiovascular system and immunity. In addition, adequate omega-3 intake is associated with a reduced likelihood of depression and age-related cognitive decline, including the development of Alzheimer’s disease.

The review highlights the gap between scientific evidence, current recommendations and actual population levels of these fatty acids. The authors note the need to eliminate confusion around omega-3 intakes and highlight their benefits at all stages of life for healthy people. Whereas previous recommendations focused primarily on specific critical periods – such as pregnancy, childbirth or old age – this work covers the entire life cycle, making the findings more applicable and understandable to a wider population.

The analysis found that the most common recommendation for adults is a daily intake of 250 mg of EPA and DHA combined, with pregnant women advised to get an additional 100-200 mg of DHA. These levels can be achieved by increasing your intake of oily fish such as salmon or mackerel, or by taking supplements if necessary. The authors also noted a number of challenges that different populations face when trying to meet current omega-3 intake standards. These include low seafood consumption, environmental and sustainability constraints, and some people’s limited access to information about the proper use of supplements.
