The approach must be changed immediately and care should be taken to store and inject the water into the ground. This is the effective way to refill and restore the groundwater that is Israel’s national emergency water reservoir.”

“The solution we developed offers a smart and efficient approach, but also applicable and relatively cheap: the tanks store the rainwater locally, and the computerized system manages their release in a phased and controlled manner – at a time when the municipal infrastructure is free to absorb them. This way we significantly reduce the risk of flooding, and at the same time turn the stormwater into a useful resource for the building’s residents,” adds Prof. Friedler.

He further describes: “The water that is stored can be used for a series of daily uses such as flushing toilets and washing, even though it also complies with drinking water regulations. In addition, reusing rainwater reduces the consumption of drinking water and reduces the energy footprint of households. This is an important step on the way to making cities more durable, smart and sustainable.”
