A healthy man suffered a stroke after daily consumption of energy drinks

Upon admission to the hospital, the man’s blood pressure was abnormally high, 254 x 150 millimeters of mercury. These are values ​​that are considered life-threatening, which may lead to cerebral hemorrhage, heart attack and damage to vital organs. The medical team immediately began intensive drug treatment to lower his blood pressure and stabilize his condition. Despite the treatment, and after his release to his home, a sharp increase in blood pressure was recorded again, which remained high and persistent even after increasing the medication doses.

Due to the incompatibility between the patient’s general health condition and the extreme blood pressure, the doctors decided to take a deeper look into his lifestyle. In further questioning it became clear that the man used to drink an average of eight energy drinks a day. A simple calculation revealed that he consumed about 1,200 milligrams of caffeine daily, three times the maximum recommended daily dose for adults, which is about 400 milligrams. To this was also added a very high consumption of sugar and other stimulants found in these drinks.

Despite the improvement in the indices, the neurological damage has not completely disappeared. The patient, who asked to remain anonymous, said that he was left with a constant feeling of circumcision in his left hand and leg, even eight years after the incident. According to him, he was not at all aware of the possible dangers of daily drinking of energy drinks, which were seen in his eyes as a legal and readily available product that is harmless.
