More than 100,000 Vietnamese people die each year due to tobacco

In The program honors typical smoke-free hotels for the first time in 2025organized by the Tobacco Harm Prevention Fund, the Ministry of Health in coordination with Culture Newspaper on the afternoon of December 24 in Hanoi, doctor Phan Thi Hai, Deputy Director of the Fund, said the above losses show that “using tobacco products seriously affects people’s health and negatively impacts socio-economic development”.

Cigarette smoke contains more than 7,000 chemicals, including at least 70 carcinogens, which are the cause of many dangerous diseases such as lung cancer, cardiovascular disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, infertility and many other incurable diseases.

Worryingly, according to Ms. Hai, teenagers using e-cigarettes is increasing rapidly. Thousands of young patients have been hospitalized due to e-cigarette poisoning, including many cases of coma, severe lung damage, and mental disorders due to using products containing narcotics.

After more than 10 years of implementing the Law on Prevention and Control of Harmful Effects of Tobacco, the Fund has coordinated to build a smoke-free environment, including a smoke-free hotel model. Many accommodation establishments prohibit smoking on campus, install “no smoking” signs, and staff are trained in guiding and reminding guests to comply with regulations. Results of the tobacco use survey (PGATS 2024), the rate of exposure to passive smoke at hotels in 2024 decreased by 14.6% compared to 2020.

On this occasion, 44 hotels were honored Smoke-free hotel. The program creates motivation to spread the smoke-free environment model throughout the service – tourism industry, encouraging smokers to reduce or quit the habit, contributing to reducing diseases caused by tobacco.
