In July, an extensive study was published in the Journal of Human Development and Capabilities based on global data analysis by the American research organization Sapien Labs. According to the findings, receiving a smartphone before the age of 13 was associated with a higher rate of suicidal thoughts, difficulty in emotional regulation, a weakened sense of reality and low self-image in young adulthood. The phenomenon was particularly noticeable among women.

The data is already permeating the decision makers: Australia was the first in the world to ban the use of social networks under the age of 16, a move that requires companies like Instagram, TikTok and Facebook to block access. Malaysia is also expected to adopt a similar policy and various states in the US are also trying to promote restrictive legislation.
