Nestlé Vietnam recalls 17 batches of NAN milk to ‘prevent’ contamination

Nestlé Vietnam on the evening of January 8 announced the recall of 17 lots of NAN brand formula milk for young children “for precautionary purposes” after the parent group recalled many types of milk globally due to concerns about toxin contamination.

In the recall notice, Nestlé Vietnam said it was “voluntarily and proactively recalling” 17 batches of NAN milk with specific batch codes and expiration dates. The company did not specify the number of recalled products, but emphasized that the products were imported by the company. It is also unclear how the company plans to recover and refund users.

In the Vietnamese market, NAN milk is imported from many sources including officially from many importing enterprises, “hand-carried” goods or of unknown origin… Thus, Nestlé Vietnam only recalled 17 batches of NAN milk imported directly by the company.

Dairy products with codes other than these 17 batches, including NAN OptiproPlus (step 3 and step 4), NAN SupremePro (3 steps), S-26 Ultima (3 steps), PreNAN, NAN ExpertPro Lactose free & ExpertPro Total Comfort, Nutren Junior, Peptamen Junior and other products distributed by the company but not on the recall announcement list “still ensure quality” and are “safe to use”, according to the notice.

According to Nestlé Vietnam, during the process of periodically reviewing raw materials, the group discovered a potential problem with the quality of raw materials (PUFA oil) from a third-party supplier. Accordingly, this material is likely to appear as traces of Cereulide produced from Bacillus cereus bacteria, used in some infant formula milk products produced in Europe.

Although the amount of oil used in these products is small and to date there is no evidence to prove the existence of Cereulide in these batches, in accordance with the principle of maximum caution, the company is voluntarily recalling potentially affected batches as a precautionary measure.

Previously, on the afternoon of January 7, Vietnam’s Ministry of Health requested units to stop business and remove information about Nestlé Beba and Alfamino milk batches due to suspicion of containing bacterial toxins. The Department of Food Safety has sent an urgent dispatch to the Ministry of Industry and Trade requesting to review and strictly handle cases of selling this product on e-commerce platforms. The management agency also requested Nestlé Vietnam to urgently inspect, report on the import situation and propose a handling plan before January 10, 2026. Responding on the same afternoon, Nestlé Vietnam affirmed that it would not import product batches on the recalled list in Europe. The company emphasized that it has never registered to announce or trade the two brands Beba and Alfamino through any distribution channels in the domestic market.

Two days ago, Nestlé Corporation announced the recall of many batches of baby formula milk in 25 countries due to suspected Cereulide toxin contamination. The actual campaign launched on a small scale in December 2025 and officially expanded this month after the business completed the necessary safety tests. The company is currently expanding its recall to more than 50 countries. The move comes after Nestlé discovered Cereulide, a toxin produced by the bacteria Bacillus cereus, existed in raw materials from a supplier. The company immediately tested arachidonic acid (ARA) oils and corresponding oil blends used to produce potentially affected nutritional shipments.

This recall campaign includes both infant formula and follow-on formula. The list of affected countries spans every continent, including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, China, France, Russia, Spain, Saudi Arabia and South Africa.

In China, product lines withdrawn from shelves include Liduojing, Lido Essence, Platinum NAN, NAN 1, 2, 3 and Wyeth Baby Formula. The UK and Irish markets recorded the recall of a number of batches of SMA brand milk with expiration dates from October 2026 to November 2027. In Germany, the recall applies to the BEBA and Alfamino lines. Particularly in Australia and New Zealand, Alfamino 400 grams with an expiration date from April 18 to July 22, 2027 are also forced to stop circulating.

Many other famous brands in the warning include Lactogen Harmony 1, BEBA (OptiPro, Comfort, Supreme, ExpertPro lines), NAN (Sensilac, HA, Pro, ExpertPro, OptiPro, Supreme, Sensitive lines) and Guigoz OptiPro Relais.
