Exposure of the Animals Association: In Israel, calves and cows are fed poultry manure and feces

The practice is not new, and it is allowed in Israel under several conditions and regulations, despite the State Comptroller’s criticism of it in a report dating back to 2008. According to data received by the Animals association due to a request under the Freedom of Information Act, the Ministry of Agriculture approves the use of 43 thousand tons of poultry manure as animal feed each year, an amount that can fill over 1,400 trucks that will stand bumper to bumper from Tel Aviv to Netanya. According to the ministry, it does not have any data regarding the “actual use” of the permits granted.

The practice is banned in the European Union, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Canada, Japan, Namibia, Australia and New Zealand. Alongside faeces feeding, the website launched as part of the exposure includes additional information on conditions in the beef, chicken and fish industries, including environmental issues, and health and welfare issues, all revolving around the fact that the animals on these farms grow and live in a great deal of faeces.
