Chinese media reported that The Vi began showing signs of health abnormalities before the 2021 university entrance exam. The 18-year-old female student shared that she often suffered from severe pain in her right leg. There were times when the pain was so bad that she “couldn’t walk” but still tried to study.

The Vi once fainted during a university math exam but endured the pain and completed the exam. After completing the exam, the female student went to the hospital for examination and was diagnosed with bone cancer. A year later, her disease progressed rapidly. The weak physical condition made The Vi exhausted from the heavy chemotherapy sessions with side effects such as hair loss, skin darkening and continuous vomiting. Doctors tried to improve Vi’s white blood cell and platelet index, but to prevent the tumor from spreading, they were forced to amputate her right leg.

Due to his painful illness, The Vi also had to endure coldness from his relatives. Since The Vi fell ill, his father has not come to visit once. The mother initially agreed to take her child to Beijing for treatment after her grandmother’s pleas, but soon considered The Vi a burden and completely cut off contact.

There was no support left, but The Vi did not give up. After passing the exam at Hefei Normal University, in order to have money for treatment, she went to school while writing online and crocheting handmade toys to sell on the street. The Vi personally signed six surgical commitments, saved money to buy a prosthetic leg to learn to walk, and traveled alone between cities in search of treatment opportunities.

Earlier this year, challenges struck The Vi again when cancer cells continued to metastasize to the ribs and pleura. She is currently being treated actively at Thuyjin Hospital in Shanghai, with a new chemotherapy and targeted treatment regimen.
