Is postpartum fatty liver dangerous?

Postpartum fatty liver is a condition in which the liver accumulates excessive fat after giving birth, usually a late stage of acute fatty liver during pregnancy. Most people with fatty liver of pregnancy are diagnosed in the last trimester or early postpartum period.

The cause of the disease has not been clearly determined, but it may be related to a number of factors such as hormonal changes, weight loss or weight gain too quickly during pregnancy, unbalanced diet, metabolic disorders… Symptoms of postpartum fatty liver are often non-specific and difficult to recognize. Some signs may appear such as dark urine, mild increase in liver enzymes, fatigue, abdominal pain, nausea.

Postpartum fatty liver is mild and does not affect liver function much and can be cured. Depending on the specific case, the doctor will treat you accordingly. Grade 2 fatty liver can be recovered if you persistently maintain a scientific lifestyle, check liver enzyme index, blood fat, control weight and do liver ultrasound every 3-6 months.

You should prioritize eating enough protein, healthy fats, fiber, vitamins, antioxidants from healthy foods such as salmon, beans, and nuts, and drink 1.5-2 liters of water every day. You limit foods high in bad cholesterol (red meat, sausages, animal organs), cakes, sugary drinks, and alcohol.

Maintaining gentle exercise and suitable physical condition can help reduce liver fat. After giving birth, your body has not fully recovered, you should choose light exercises such as brisk walking, cycling, swimming or yoga… Your doctor can prescribe some groups of supporting drugs such as vitamin E, vitamins B and C to help the liver restore function and treat fat metabolism disorders
