Tips to keep your eyes healthy, avoid increasing nearsightedness

Nearsighted people should not watch electronic devices too much, maintain correct viewing distance and posture, and increase time spent outdoors to prevent increased myopia.

Dr. Nguyen Duc Huy, High-Tech Ophthalmology Specialist, Tam Anh General Clinic, District 7, said that during Tet, many people tend to stay up late watching movies, surfing the phone, playing games, and reading long stories for hours, causing nearsightedness to increase quickly. Doctors suggest some ways to avoid increasing nearsightedness.

Limit time using electronic devices

During Tet, many people spend a lot of time using phones, tablets and televisions for entertainment activities. Blue light from the screen and constant close viewing cause the eyes to adjust a lot, easily causing eye strain and increasing nearsightedness.

Dr. Huy recommends applying the 20-20-20 rule, which means that after every 20 minutes of looking up close, look away about 6 meters (20 feet) for at least 20 seconds to relax your eyes. You should adjust the screen brightness to suit the ambient light, avoid using the device in a dark room or before going to bed.

Maintain correct viewing distance and posture

When reading books, newspapers or using the phone, the safe distance should be 30 to 40 cm. Lying down to look at your phone, bowing your head too low or looking sideways for long periods of time increases pressure on your eyes. Sitting with your back straight and keeping the screen at eye level helps reduce stress on the regulatory system.

Get enough sleep, avoid staying up late

Doctor Huy said that during Tet, staying up late is a common habit due to family activities and gathering with friends. However, lack of sleep does not give the eyes enough time to recover, leading to dry eyes, eye fatigue and impaired vision. Adults should sleep 7-8 hours a day, children need to sleep early and get enough sleep to ensure normal eye development, especially for nearsighted people.

Increase time spent outdoors

Many studies show that natural light helps slow down the progression of myopia, especially in children. During the Tet holidays, instead of staying indoors with electronic devices, people should spend time participating in outdoor activities such as walking, playing light sports, and visiting relatives. Just 1-2 hours a day of exposure to natural light brings significant benefits to the eyes.

Pay attention to nutrition

Nutrition plays a role in supporting eye health. In the Tet feast, in addition to dishes high in protein and fat, it is necessary to supplement green vegetables and fruits rich in vitamins A, C, E and omega-3 such as carrots, pumpkin, oranges, salmon, and nuts. Drinking enough water also helps limit dry eyes, contributing to eye stability and avoiding increased nearsightedness.
