Older brotherInstead of enjoying her old age, Helga Sands embarked on the race for longevity by spending half a million pounds to revive her body with unlicensed therapies.
Next month, Ms. Sands will fly to Panama to receive a “rejuvenation cocktail” worth 300,000 pounds (more than 10.5 billion VND), according to Sunday Times. This therapy, the result of a collaboration between her and a laboratory in the US, includes three main ingredients: the Klotho protein that boosts brain function, the muscle-building Follistatin and the SIRT1 enzyme that boosts energy levels. Women believe this mixture will revive both mind and body, and even prolong life beyond expectations.
This is just the latest step in a five-year “biohacking” journey that has cost this former bank manager more than half a million pounds. Currently living in Shakespeare Tower (London), Ms. Sands maintains a busy schedule by taking 70 supplements a day, washing her hair with sheep shampoo and sleeping on silver-woven bedsheets to reduce inflammation.

More drastically, the U90 woman turned her kitchen into a laboratory. She ordered compounds not licensed by the UK from India or the US to prepare her own topical medications and complementary solutions. She uses dasatinib and quercetin – anti-cancer and antioxidant compounds – to eliminate senescent cells. She also spends 2,000 pounds every quarter to inject herself with 2,000 billion extracellular vesicles (exosomes) extracted from amniotic fluid to restore her skin, and periodically performs dialysis and ozone gas infusion to optimize oxygen metabolism.
“Maybe you like the idea of dying and going to heaven, but I don’t. I want to continue living because life has so much to look forward to. Instead of slowing down, I’m speeding up,” Ms. Sands shared. The woman added that recently someone asked if she would be satisfied if she lived to be 120 or 130?
“The answer is no way. I have absolutely no limits for myself,” Sands expressed.
The race for longevity is considered a playground for young technology billionaires like Bryan Johnson (48 years old) or Mark Zuckerberg (41 years old). However, Ms. Sands proves that this ambition does not discriminate by age. Born in 1938 in Germany, she survived World War II, walking for 8 months from Czechoslovakia to Düsseldorf amid gunfire. After settling in London and succeeding in finance at Nomura, she retired in 1997 and began her quest for immortality.
Ms. Sands affirmed that the therapies are clearly working as muscle mass increases, balance improves and many chronic diseases disappear. She maintains the habit of walking 10,000 steps a day, but often has to walk alone because her peers are no longer healthy enough to keep up.

Even though her daughter did not fully support her, Ms. Sands was still steadfast in being a “pathfinder”. She and her husband have even founded a start-up company with the hope of mass-producing the “rejuvenation cocktail” that is about to be tested in Panama. “There are really effective methods but they are blocked by legal barriers. We decided to just do it,” she said.
Experts warn that this type of self-experiment carries extremely dangerous risks. Professor Ilaria Bellantuono from the University of Sheffield said the safety and effectiveness of the therapies that Ms. Sands is testing have not yet been proven through human trials. “My view is that therapies of this type should not be used until they have been rigorously tested through thorough clinical trials,” the professor said.
