Tel Aviv Marathon: Dozens of runners needed medical treatment, 5 in serious condition from heatstroke

The emergency medicine department and the anesthesia teams of Ichilov set up a dedicated treatment tent this morning at the Tel Aviv Marathon complex, with the aim of providing immediate medical attention to runners who needed it during the competition. In the tent, doctors, nurses and brothers from the medical center and the anesthesia department worked in cooperation with the MDA teams that were working at the scene.

According to the data provided, by noon, 35 runners who needed medical treatment arrived at the tent. Six of them were taken to the Ichilov Hospital for further investigation and supervision.

The Ichilov Hospital reported: “89 runners who needed medical treatment arrived at the emergency room tent of the Ichilov Hospital, of which 23 were evacuated for further treatment in Ichilov. 8 of the injured suffered from heatstroke and were listed in serious condition. As of this time, the condition of all the injured has stabilized and most of them are expected to be released soon.”

Among the patients were five runners who arrived in serious condition after suffering from heatstroke. They were immediately treated with active cooling, including ice baths, in order to quickly lower their body temperature and prevent life-threatening complications. Two other runners were classified as in moderate condition, and the rest were treated in mild condition and released after observation.

The nature of the recorded injuries included heat stroke, general weakness, cardiac arrhythmias and various orthopedic injuries, including sprains and bruises. The medical teams in the field continued to monitor the condition of the runners and provide treatment as needed.
