Why do strokes require emergency treatment?

Every minute that passes, millions of brain cells die

The brain is an organ that is completely dependent on blood and oxygen supply. When blood flow is blocked by a clot or a ruptured blood vessel, brain cells begin to damage almost immediately.

In an ischemic stroke (the most common type), each minute without intervention can cause about 2 million nerve cells to die, with billions of nerve connections destroyed. This damage does not take place in a few hours but occurs continuously every minute. The consequences depend on the area of ​​the brain affected. Patients may lose the ability to speak, have memory loss, be paralyzed on one side of the body or have cognitive disorders.

The “golden window” of treatment is very short

Stroke has a very limited window for effective intervention, often referred to as the “golden window”. Treatment should start as soon as possible, ideally within the first few hours of symptoms appearing. Modern methods such as fibrinolytic drugs or thrombectomy can help restore blood flow to the brain. However, the effectiveness of these methods decreases rapidly over time.

With hemorrhagic stroke – when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures – the condition is even more dangerous. The patient may need emergency surgery to stop the bleeding and relieve pressure on the brain.

Brain damage cannot be fully reversed

Unlike many other organs in the body, brain cells, once dead, are almost impossible to regenerate. Therefore, every minute of delay means permanent loss of part of the brain’s function.

In emergency stroke care, the longer the time, the more serious the brain damage. Patients brought to the hospital early have a better chance of recovery, while those who arrive late are more likely to face serious sequelae such as loss of ability to move, talk, or even death.

Early detection of signs of stroke plays a decisive role. Symptoms often appear suddenly, including loss of balance and dizziness; blurred vision or loss of vision; distorted mouth, misaligned face; weakness or numbness of one limb; difficulty speaking or slurred speech.

The BEFAST rule helps to quickly identify a stroke through the following signs: loss of balance (Balance), disturbance of vision (Eyes), distorted mouth (Face), weakness of arms and legs (Arms), difficulty speaking (Speech). The letter “T” (time) emphasizes calling emergency services immediately when signs appear, because every minute that passes increases the risk of brain damage.
