A 12-year-old boy suffered multiple injuries when a tricycle ran over him

While walking home from extra classes, the 12-year-old patient collided with a tricycle traveling in the same direction, and the wheel crushed him.

The child was taken to Hospital E in critical condition, with multiple traumatic shocks, severe hemorrhagic shock, and swelling and contusions in many areas of his body. Examination results showed that the patient had blunt abdominal trauma, pelvic trauma…

MSc. Do Quoc Phong, Deputy Head of the Department of Intensive Care and Poison Control, assessed this as a serious and dangerous emergency. The patient was still young, suffered many injuries at the same time, was in a state of severe hemorrhagic shock, and was at risk of death at any time. In particular, the child suffered injuries to the pelvis and thigh areas with the characteristics of spongy bone tissue, leading to very serious blood loss, making it difficult to stop the bleeding.

Doctors quickly embolized the patient’s internal iliac artery to stop bleeding at the locations causing heavy blood loss. In the first 24 hours after admission, the patient received nearly 4 liters of blood transfusion to maintain life. Large blood transfusions can help patients overcome the critical stage, but they still pose many potential risks and complications that need to be treated promptly, such as: lung damage, kidney tubular damage, infectious complications. Citrate toxicity and hypocalcemia, complications of hypothermia, circulatory overload…

After iliac artery embolization, doctors continue to treat bleeding to stabilize the patient. The team specializing in digestive surgery continued to stitch up the bladder rupture site and treat other injuries in the abdomen.

After 4 days of treatment, the patient’s health has stabilized and continues to be monitored and rehabilitated.

Dr. Phong said that in the situation of a pediatric patient suffering from complex multi-traumatic shock, quick and accurate treatment is very important. The child was given first aid and timely emergency transportation by the E Hospital emergency department team present at the scene, resulting in his life being saved.
