Iron nail stuck in brain for more than a year

A 66-year-old male patient often had headaches and dizziness. After examination, he discovered an iron nail stuck in his brain.

The CT scan results of the skull at the Vietnam – Cuba Friendship Hospital in Dong Hoi on July 24 showed an image of a foreign object resembling an iron nail piercing the back of the patient’s neck into the brain. He was admitted to the hospital, and surgeons removed the foreign object, a 7cm long iron nail, from his head.

“This is a rare case. Luckily, the nail was not in a dangerous position and the patient did not experience any serious complications,” said a hospital representative.

The family said that a year ago, the man discovered a small wound, causing bleeding behind the head, which healed on its own and he did not go to the doctor. The patient did not know why the iron nail was stuck in his head.

Doctors recommend that when being stabbed by sharp objects (knives, keys, etc.), the first aid provider or patient must absolutely not pull the foreign object out immediately because it can cause injury, massive bleeding, leading to death. The appropriate solution is to immobilize the foreign object and take the victim to the nearest medical facility.
