Why do bones and joints often hurt during the rainy season?

Bone and joint diseases often recur or become worse due to changes in weather and humidity, people are less active and lazy to exercise during the rainy season.

According to Dr. Chu Thi Dung, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City – Facility 3, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, sciatica, gout, systemic lupus erythematosus… are diseases related to bones and joints that often recur during the rainy season.

This can be due to the fact that we are less active and less likely to exercise in cold weather; changes in atmospheric pressure cause muscles, bones and tendons to contract. Low temperatures can increase the thickness of joint fluid, making them stiffer and more sensitive to pain when moving.

At the same time, temperature changes during the rainy season, when the temperature drops or gets colder, cause the muscles and ligaments around the joints to contract. The joints then stiffen and become difficult to move, leading to increased pain.

When it rains, the atmospheric pressure drops, which means less pressure is placed on our bodies. The lack of pressure causes the tissues in our bodies to swell, causing irritation and pain in the joints.

According to Dr. Dung, to limit joint pain during the rainy season, you should exercise and do light exercises to increase joint flexibility and prevent joint pain. Exercise also helps maintain a healthy weight and reduce joint pain.

Always keep your body warm by dressing appropriately for the weather, taking warm baths, applying warm compresses, and balancing the room temperature. Protect your joints from excessive moisture, wear suitable footwear, and use an umbrella during the rainy season to avoid getting wet. Avoid staying in damp places for long periods of time.

Adjust your diet. Some studies have shown that foods like green tea, berries, broccoli, and whole grains can help reduce inflammation, so include these foods in your diet.

When the symptoms of bone and joint diseases become severe, patients should not arbitrarily use painkillers and unverified folk remedies. They should go to the hospital for examination and treatment.
