Dong NaiAfter being struck by lightning in the shoulder, the 13-year-old boy suffered cardiac and respiratory arrest and was saved by doctors in time.

On August 28, Dong Nai Children’s Hospital said the boy’s health is stable and his mind is alert.

On August 22, while playing outdoors, a 13-year-old boy was struck by lightning and knocked unconscious. His family called 115 and took him to Dong Nai General Hospital. The team continuously shocked him with electric shock and used anti-arrhythmic drugs. After about 15 minutes, his heart rate and blood pressure returned.

The patient was then transferred to Dong Nai Children’s Hospital for further treatment with his pupils constricted and his blood pressure gradually stabilizing. Despite being put on a ventilator and taking anti-arrhythmic drugs for a long time, the child remained in a deep coma.

At this time, doctors lowered the patient’s body temperature to avoid brain damage and reduce sequelae. By August 25, the functions of the organs were preserved, and consciousness was good, so hypothermia was stopped and the ventilator was removed.

According to Dr. Nghia, Deputy Director of Dong Nai Children’s Hospital, at the time of emergency, the child was still in serious condition. Fearing that transferring to Ho Chi Minh City would endanger his life due to the long distance, the hospital decided to keep the child to save him.

“The patient was very lucky because the lightning only grazed from the shoulder down, causing respiratory and circulatory arrest for 30 minutes and he received timely emergency care. Furthermore, the functions of his organs were preserved, leaving no sequelae,” said Mr. Nghia.
