Davis Cup 2024, Cobolli beats Griekspoor and Italy-Holland 2-0

Italy closes Group A of the Davis Cup in first place with three wins out of three matches. After the successes over Brazil and Belgium, the Azzurri also defeat Holland. At the Unipol Arena in Bologna after Matteo Berrettini’s victory over Botic Van de Zandschulp, Flavio Cobolli, world number 32, has surpassed Tallon Griekspoornumber 39 in the ATP ranking, with a score of 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-3 in two hours and 10 minutes, giving the 2-0 victory to the national team led by captain Filippo Volandri.

Berrettini, world number 43, beat Van de Zandschulp, number 68 in the ATP ranking, with a score of 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 after two hours and 21 minutes.

At the Final 8 in Malaga, scheduled for November 19-24, Italy will face either Australia or Argentina in the quarterfinals: they will find out in the draw that will be held next Thursday. In Malaga, the Azzurri will also be able to count on world number one Jannik Sinner, today an exceptional spectator of Berrettini’s match. The South Tyrolean then left the Unipol Arena halfway through the first set of Cobolli’s match.

Bolelli-Vavassori defeated, Holland wins doubles against Italy and qualifies for the Final 8 in Malaga

The Netherlands is the eighth and final team to qualify for the Davis Cup Final 8 in Malaga. The ‘orange’ secured their spot thanks to the victory in the doubles won by Botic Van de Zandschulp and Wesley Koolhof against the Italians Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori, defeated with a score of 7-6 (8-6), 7-5) in two hours of play. These are the eight qualified: Italy, Spain, United States, Canada, Australia, Germany, Argentina and the Netherlands. The quarterfinal draw will be next Thursday with the Italians facing either the ‘Aussies’ or the ‘Albiceleste’ national team.
