Frankfurt Lions sign former NHL goalkeeper Greiss

The Frankfurt Lions have signed long-time NHL goalkeeper Thomas Greiss. The German Ice Hockey League club has thus reacted to the loss of Jussi Olkinuora and Cody Brenner. According to the Hesse team, the 38-year-old native of Füssen will help out at short notice and will play in the match against ERC Ingolstadt on Friday.

Greiss brings with him the experience of 385 NHL games. He last played for the St. Louis Blues in the USA in 2023 and then announced his retirement.

“In the current situation, this is the ideal solution for us, as he is not entitled to a contract until the end of the season,” said sports director Daniel Heinrizi. Greiss said: “I am looking forward to seeing some old friends again and to being able to experience the great atmosphere in the German ice rinks again.”

Greiss also played for the San José Sharks, Phoenix Coyotes, Pittsburgh Penguins, New York Islanders and Detroit Red Wings. He represented the German national team at the 2006 and 2010 Olympic Games.
