The playoffs were already special, but the first game in the league phase of the Conference League is even more special for 1. FC Heidenheim. The word “historic” is definitely appropriate, said coach Frank Schmidt before the game against Slovenian club NK Olimpija Ljubljana on Thursday (6.45 p.m./RTL+).
In just the second year after promotion to the Bundesliga, the Heidenheimers are playing internationally for the first time. After beating former Swedish champions BK Häcken in the playoffs, they now have six games in the league phase. At the end of November, the glorious FC Chelsea from London is coming to the Ostalb. Schmidt’s focus is initially on the tricky task against Ljubljana.
Ljubljana is still unbeaten in 16 competitive games
One of Heidenheim’s strengths is to “think in stages,” explained the 50-year-old. The Slovenians are still unbeaten this season. In 16 competitive games they celebrated eleven wins and five draws. The current league leader in the Slovenian league has great offensive qualities, said the FCH coach. He himself may have to do without the ailing striker Mikkel Kaufmann.
The anticipation of the special evening can be seen not only by Schmidt, but also by the Heidenheim players. “I have been a professional for 15 years. It took a long time,” said regular goalkeeper Kevin Müller recently. “This is great for everyone involved. It’s also something cool for the people in the city to be able to experience something like that.”
