Cycle around Australia in record time

Professional cyclist Lachlan Morton completed his formidable task in record time. He pedaled around Australia in 30 days, or about 14,200 kilometers.

He ended his career on Saturday in his hometown of Port Macquarie.

The first record for that trip dates back to 1899. Back then, the trail trip took 245 days. Since then, the record has been broken at regular intervals, and now Morton broke the previous record by almost a week.

“I’m quite exhausted,” he commented The Guardianille.

After reaching the finish line, Morton hugged people close to him. He also popped open a bottle of bubbly and fanned himself by spraying the drink around.

It took 30 days, nine hours and 59 minutes to complete. That means a daily speed of about 450 kilometers.

At the same time, the cyclist collected a pot of 130,000 dollars, or about 118,000 euros, for charity. The money will be donated to the ILF Foundation, which fosters the literacy of indigenous peoples.

The last one every day for a month Morton woke up late at night and drove through the night and much of the day. Then he slept for six or seven hours.

After waking up from the first nap after work, panic struck. Morton still thought he was on a trip.

“I woke up drenched in sweat thinking I was late,” says the cyclist.

Travel technically it went quite well, only three flat tires, a small mechanical problem and one collision with a kangaroo.

Physically and mentally, the job was the hardest of Morton’s career. The last ten days in particular were tough.

“Physically and mentally, I went to places I’ve never been before.”

“I’ve never been more relieved to finish something than I was today,” Morton said.
