The Italian, number 30 in the world and 28 in the seeding, defeated the Swiss Stan Wawrinka, number 236 in the ATP ranking but former number 3, with a score of 6-7 (6-8), 7-6 (7- 4), 6-3 in two hours and 31 minutes. Cobolli will face the Serbian Novak Djokovic, number 4 in the world and on the scoreboard, in the third round.
Lorenzo Musetti and Matteo Berrettini are out of the tournament. Musetti lost in three sets against the Belgian David Goffin, Berrettini, in the second round, was beaten in three sets by the Dane Holger Rune.
