The end of a 147-year tradition: Wimbledon ushers in a revolution

Starting next year, the world’s largest tennis tournament, Wimbledon, will no longer have line judges. They will be replaced by an electronic car calling system, the All England Club announced.

This breaks the 147-year tradition of using linesmen.

The electronic car calling system on tennis courts was used experimentally for the first time at the ATP Next Gen final in Milan in 2017, its use increased during the pandemic of the COVID-19 virus, and from next year it will be used at all ATP tournaments.

The Australian Open and the US Open switched to electronic car calling even earlier, while Roland Garros still relies on the human eye.
