Surprise in Formula 1: Toyota is back

From 2002 to 2009 was Toyota an integral part of Formula 1, after which the Japanese withdrew from the premier class to concentrate on their core business.

Now Toyota is back again – in the form of a partnership with the US team Haas. The team announced this in a press conference in Fuji on Friday.

The motorsport department “Toyota Gazzoo Racing” will become a “technical partner” and will provide design and technical services as well as manufacturing capacities. The Toyota logo will be on the cars at the upcoming race in Austin, Texas on October 20th Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg be seen.

It is not yet known what the collaboration will look like in detail. What is certain, however, is that Toyota will build entire components.

Haas team boss Ayao Komtsu said: “Having a world-leading car manufacturer at our side supporting us while at the same time developing and accelerating its own technical expertise – this is a partnership that offers clear benefits for both sides.” Toyota says it wants to generate more than just advertising value. They said they wanted to promote drivers, engineers and mechanics and make a contribution to motorsport and the automotive industry.
