A former Polish basketball player died in a fire: ‘His mother shouted to save him. It was late’

A famous Polish basketball player Zbigniew Marculewicz (46), gameč with more than 260 games in the elite rank of Polish basketball, he died last weekend in a fire in the village of Nowodziel, which is located on the border with Belarus.

Marculewicz moved there after his career ended. He lived with his mother and sister who managed to get out of the house after the fire broke out. Unfortunately, he did not manage to save himself.

– When I saw smoke coming out of my neighbor’s house, I immediately ran to help. The building quickly burst into flames, I saw his sister taking mother Irena out, and she shouted to me to save Zbigniew. The smoke was so thick that it was impossible to breathe, nothing could be seen, and I don’t know if I would have been able to get him out if I had reached him. He was a big guy of two meters, the firemen arrived quickly, but not fast enough to save him – said the neighbor.

Upon arrival, the ambulance could only state the death. It is suspected that the cause of the fire was a fire that ignited in the chimney.

Marculewicz left his biggest mark on Polish basketball in the early 2000s, and he was one of the best blockers in the league. He won the championship in 2004 with his team Polpharm Starogard Gdanski.
