Cycling: Track Cycling World Championships: Briton Charlton sets a world record

Brit Josh Charlton surprisingly set a world record in the 4000 meter individual pursuit at the start of the third day of the Track Cycling World Championships in Copenhagen. The 21-year-old, who had already won World Championship silver in the team pursuit on Thursday, completed the 16 laps in 3:59.304 minutes. The old record was held by Italian superstar Filippo Ganna (3:59.636) for two years.

The young German pursuers Bruno Kessler (4:14.021) and Ben Felix Jochum (4:14.982), however, missed the final runs in the evening. Felix Groß from Leipzig did not take part due to illness.

In the 1000 meter time trial, the German champion Henric Hackmann (12th place/1:01.055) and Pete-Collin Flemming (16th/1:01.932) also finished after qualifying. The fastest was Harrie Lavreysen from the Netherlands (57.468), who could secure his 15th gold medal with another success and thus become the record world champion.
