Sebastián Mora, world scoring champion in track cycling

This Friday, the Spanish Sebastián Mora won the gold medal in the scoring event of the Track Cycling World Championship, which is being held in Ballerup (Denmark), by finishing ahead of the Dane Niklas Larsen and the Dutch Philip Heijnen.

At the Ballerup Super Arena, the man from Castellón achieved 70 points after completing 160 laps of the velodrome, the last of which was key to his success with the double score. Having monopolized the spotlight almost from the beginning, Mora gave the final push to win the last of the 16 sprints and add this world title to the scratch title in 2016.

However, among the favorites, it was Heijnen and then Larsen who were the first to really attack along with the Japanese Naoki Kojima. Attentive at the front of the peloton, the Spaniard remained with only four points until he gained a lap in the company of several competitors and was in eighth place at the beginning of lap number 75.

The cyclist from Villarreal continued to climb places in subsequent sprints and, with 63 complete laps to go around the velodrome, he once again gained a lap alongside Heijnen. The Dutchman then reached the provisional first position with 60 points and Mora was second with 51, both of them being bothered by Larsen, who slipped in between them a little later.

However, Mora moved with great skill in the face of the last two sprints and in the sixteenth he hit the ax to render useless the attacks of the Belgian Fabio Van den Bossche – who finished fifth with 46 points – and the possible threat of the American Peter Moore -who finished fourth with 48 points-.

Those 70 points accumulated by Mora caused Larsen to take the silver with his 69 points, despite the fact that the Dane had the support of the public and also pushed in the decisive moments; Meanwhile, Heijnen grabbed the bronze medal thanks to his 65 points.
