Triathlon: the incredible double of Cassandre Beaugrand, crowned world champion after Olympic gold

The golden conclusion to a… historic season. Victorious in 1h56′45″, Cassandre Beaugrand won the final stage of the 2024 World Triathlon Championship Series in Torremolinos (Spain) this Saturday, thus becoming world champion! A first for French women’s triathlon.

Olympic gold medalist in Paris two and a half months ago, the native of Livry-Gargan did not have an easy afternoon, despite her hundred points ahead of her British rival Beth Potter in the general classification. Indeed, the big favorite of this final had a big scare during the swim, taking the wrong route and finishing the first swim lap in 31st place. But Beaugrand is decidedly unsinkable. Victorious in the last two WTCS stages in Cagliari and Hamburg before her Olympic title in the streets of Paris on July 31, the Frenchwoman limited the damage by starting the bike in 10th place and making the hole in her specialty, racing. foot.

Never panicked despite the possibility of becoming the first blue triathlete to sit on the world throne, the 27-year-old, who had the possibility of finishing one place behind Potter or the German Lisa Tertsch, left nothing to her opponents, determined to achieve an apotheosis in a season where she won everything. Beaugrand finished her race with 37 seconds on her runner-up Beth Potter, while a second Blue, Emma Lombardi, completed the podium (49″).

But the queen of the French triathlon will have to wait a few hours before savoring her success, since the British delegation filed a complaint to contest the result, considering that the jet-ski which redirected Beaugrand during the swimming part constituted “external assistance”. World Triathlon is currently studying the appeal.
