Fernando Alonso to Red Bull? Horner confirms contact

Fernando Alonso held further talks with Red Bull at the beginning of the year.

This was reported by the team boss Christian Horner on the edge of Mexican Grand Prix. “At that point the contract was from Sergio Perez not yet extended,” emphasized Horner when asked.

The Mexican had a new contract at the beginning of June Red Bull signed, which should be valid until the end of 2026. His whereabouts beyond this year are still questionable; the 34-year-old has been in a performance slump for months and is about to start his Formula 1 home race only eighth in the World Cup rankings.

His teammate Max Verstappen leads the World Cup standings and is heading for his fourth World Cup title in a row.

“Terrible” season for Pérez

Pérez himself recently described his season as “terrible”. Horner agreed. “I think he summed it up perfectly. It was a bad year for Checo (Pérez). He started strong, He has been struggling for form since Imola“Horner said.

Nevertheless, Pérez will also be in the cockpit next season. “He has a contract until 2025. He is competitive. He is hungry. He is not happy with where he is at the moment. As a team we are doing our best to support him.”

Alonso and Red Bull: Nothing again!

Alonso, 43 years old and at Aston Martin under contract, won the World Championship in 2005 and 2006 and is taking part in his 400th Grand Prix in Mexico. “Two world championship titles don’t do him justice,” Horner said of Alonso: “He would have deserved more.”

A Verstappen/Alonso driver pairing next year would certainly have sent many Formula 1 fans into a frenzy. But nothing came of it again, and for the third time a collaboration didn’t come about. Alonso had contacts with Red Bull for the first time in 2008. As Horner went on to say, they had offered Alonso a two-year contract at the time, but he only wanted to commit to one year. “If he had come to us in 2009, things might have looked different,” said Horner. Red Bull’s title era began in 2010 Sebastian Vettel.

But Alonso was there Renault stayed and from 2010 for Ferrari started. They spoke to each other again in 2011 or 2012, Horner reported.
