A situation that began late yesterday evening when the mayor of the city of Bologna decided to sign an ordinance to avoid problems of public order: “The mayor – we read in a note issued by the official website of the Municipality -, having consulted the police commissioner and the prefect, this afternoon, signed an order ordering the suspension of the football match scheduled for Saturday 26 October at 6pm at the Renato Dall’Ara stadium. The decision was shared with the prefecture: the Bologna-Milan match would lead to Dall’Ara stadium, in via Andrea Costa and therefore near the most critical area of ​​the city, around 35,000 people, with consequent public order problems due to the presence of fans and the closure of traffic in the entire surrounding area from early afternoon and until the night.”A decision that surprised the Lega Serie A “for two reasons. Generally these decisions are taken by the prefect, which came from the mayor surprised us”, the words of the president Lorenzo Casini at the end of the Assembly.

However, the president of Milan was annoyed Paolo Scaroni who described the choice as “incomprehensible”. “The mayor has banned the match behind closed doors, I don’t understand why. An attempt was made to speak with the mayor to be able to play behind closed doors, but the municipality did not there was willingness on this: the choice became whether to impose a neutral pitch 24 hours apart, imposing it on the two teams, or whether to respect the order of an authority recognized by law and postpone the match”.

The discussion inevitably involved the twenty clubs (the meeting was interrupted and then resumed to allow the Board of Directors to decide what to do): Milan had indicated their willingness to play on any field, Bologna instead preferred to opt for postponement. CEO Fenucci was satisfied: “The match has been postponed. There is an objective situation of difficulty in the stadium area, where there have also been collapses. So beyond the solidarity that we always express in favor of the families, there was also an objective situation that made it difficult to play the match in Bologna. It seems to me that it is the wisest decision, because it also allows us to safeguard the proceeds of the match which will partly be donated to the affected populations.”
