Roma’s German defender Mats Hummels criticized Real Madrid’s decision not to attend the Ballon d’Or Gala when he learned that Brazilian Vinícius Júnior would not win the award for best player in the world, comparing that attitude with that of former American president Donald Trump and calling it “disrespectful.”
“Using expressions like ‘lack of respect’ when not winning a vote has a certain ‘Trumpist’ air to it and, unfortunately, it is a lack of respect for others. That’s what’s serious,” Hummels said in statements on his podcast.
The Ballon d’Or was received by the Spanish Rodri Hernández, from Manchester City, ahead of the Real Madrid player Vinícius Júnior, and that meant that no one represented Real Madrid at the gala. And Hummels compared this reaction to Trump’s refusal to accept his defeat in the 2020 presidential election against Joe Biden, arguing alleged fraud.
“There is no doubt that some Real Madrid player deserved it. But there are other incredible players who are just as good,” said the Roma defender, regretting Real Madrid’s decision not to honor other players present. “It’s a shame not to honor them. There were teams that were much more harmed in international football,” he added.
