The Football Association ripped Uefa from Belarus: “Unfathomable”

Football Association general secretary Marco Casagrande on Thursday took a direct stance on the participation of Belarus in the women’s soccer League of Nations.

Finland was drawn into the same B-league group with Serbia, Hungary and Belarus.

“The fact that (European football confederation) Uefa allows Belarus to participate in the competition seems incomprehensible from the point of view of the Finnish team and the Finnish Football Association,” Casagrande told the Finnish Football Association on the homepage.

According to Casagrande, Uefa has put the Football Association “in an extremely difficult situation by forcing us to play against Belarus”.

“Our national teams and the federation will be sanctioned if we don’t play. The compromise is that we play on neutral ground,” Casagrande said.

Nations the league’s group stage starts in February and ends in early June. The results of the Nations League determine in which league the teams will play in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

The head coach Marko Saloranta was disappointed that Finland won the lottery.

“There were three teams in the draw that I would not have liked to meet – Serbia, Slovenia and Belarus. Two of these three were hit,” commented Saloranta in the Palloliitto’s press release.

“Of all the possible opponents, Serbia is by far the toughest team, they have played really well this year and last year.”

Belarus falling into Finland’s group means that Helmarit will only get a home game, as both matches will be played on a neutral field.

“It feels bad that we got into such a situation where Belarus is in our group. It also makes me sad that we only get to perform twice in front of a really valuable home crowd,” says Saloranta.
