Mandatory airbags for all athletes who will compete in the speed disciplines of alpine skiing starting from the 2024/25 season. A few days after the death of Matilde Lorenzi, which reignited the debate on this safety device, comes the turning point from the International Ski Federation.
In a videoconference meeting, the FIS Council approved the mandatory nature of airbags which until now were only optional and recommended: Athletes involved in fast, super-G and downhill disciplines must wear them. The National Ski Association may grant exceptions if the airbag is not suitable for the athlete and limits his or her movement in an unsafe manner.
“For FIS, athlete safety comes first and is non-negotiable,” says FIS General Secretary Michel Vion. “The adoption of airbags is part of a broader approach that involves all factors that can minimize the risk of serious injuries: from knowledge of weather conditions and track layout to equipment such as cut-resistant underwear and smart attacks. We will embrace any measure that is proven to help protect the health and well-being of athletes.”
