Women’s football: Germany wins 6-0 against Switzerland

Led by Laura Freigang and Lea Schüller, the German footballers passed their penultimate test of the year with flying colors. The Joker from Eintracht Frankfurt (50th/64th) and the Bayern striker (56th/90th+1) scored twice for the rejuvenated DFB team in the 6-0 (1-0) win in Switzerland. Christian Wück celebrated his second victory in his third game as national coach.

Sjoeke Nüsken (43rd) and the strong debutant Cora Zicai (73rd) scored the other goals against the upcoming European Championship hosts in Zurich, one of the eight EURO venues next summer. “The first goal gave us confidence, you could see that. But then we got into the flow,” said Linda Dallmann at the ZDF microphone. At the end of the year, the German team will face Italy in Bochum on Monday (8.30 p.m./ARD).

An 18-year-old celebrates her debut in the DFB uniform

Before things got going in front of 17,306 fans in the Letzigrund stadium, there were warm hugs from ex-teammate Nadine Angerer. The former world footballer has been coaching the keepers in Pia Sundhage’s Swiss coaching staff since the spring.

As announced, Wück had a debutant in the starting line-up for his European Championship casting in the DFB goal. In the absence of Ann-Katrin Berger, who was taking a break, Sophia Winkler (21) from SGS Essen started for the first time, but was given little to do. As a striker, Schüller inherited the shirt number 11 from Alexandra Popp, who said goodbye in October.

In Popp style, she tested the Swiss goalkeeper Elvira Herzog from RB Leipzig twice with her head (5th/13th), but with too little precision. The DFB team dictated the action in the early stages – but had to be extremely careful not to be countered by the offensive led by star striker Alisha Lehmann with their defense wide open.

Switzerland was increasingly deeper and well organized, the Germans lacked the speed and ideas to crack the bulwark. Herzog was also on hand to counter Cerci’s shot from a tight angle (37th), a standard was needed: after a corner from Klara Bühl, Nüsken was there with a header just before the break.

Wück brought fresh energy in the second half and gave Zicai (SC Freiburg) her first international match on her 20th birthday. Freigang also got involved and confirmed her strong form with her successful direct pass from a cross from SGE colleague Pia-Sophie Wolter, who was also a substitute.

With ten goals, the 26-year-old is currently the Bundesliga’s top goalscorer. Now things were going well for the DFB selection: a half-court cross from Zicai only touched Schüller minimally, but increased their quota to 46 goals in 68 international matches.

Afterwards, Bavarian jewel Alara Sehitler (18) was also able to give her premiere. Another free pass from Wolter’s cross made things even clearer before Zicai crowned her debut with her goal after the assist.
