Verona overwhelmed at home by Empoli (1-4), Zanetti’s bench trembles

For the umpteenth time in this first part of the season, Verona leaves the pitch submerged by the boos of their fans. Zanetti’s team, whose bench was wobbly, also foundered against Empoli, losing 4-1 at the Bentegodi. In the match valid for the fifteenth day, he sees a Verona still confused and without ideas; on the other hand, however, the Tuscans put on a show, taking advantage of the Scaligeri’s unwatchable defensive phase.

For Empoli, Esposito, Cacace and Colombo (who came on after a few minutes in place of the injured Pellegri) scored twice: Tengstedt’s goal, however, was useless. In the 16th minute Empoli’s dominance begins and, in turn, Verona’s nightmare. Sebastiano Esposito opened the scoring with a deflected shot: shortly after, the young Inter player scored his first brace in Serie A, thanks to a precise finish at the near post. The guests’ third goal also arrives in the 32nd minute, scored by Cacace.

However, the hosts seemed to show a reaction when Tengstedt made it 3-1 on an assist from Tchatchoua. Seven minutes later, however, Colombo threw Verona back into despair, drawing the joker from the edge, after the rebound from a free kick, and making it 4-1. For Zanetti’s team, therefore, it is a script we have already seen: as happened against Atalanta and Inter, for the third time in the season Verona conceded at least four goals in a half. At the end of the half, VAR also canceled a penalty awarded to Empoli by Di Bello.

In the second half D’Aversa’s team took a breather and slowed down the pace of the game, despite coming close to scoring the fifth goal several times with Colombo, Ekong and Marianucci. Mosquera’s two attempts that went just wide, however, were the yellow-blues’ only attempts. While awaiting the results of their pursuers, Empoli thus rises to ninth place in the standings. On the other hand, Verona fell to seventeenth place and “suffered” harsh criticism from its fans.
