Goalkeeper asks for forgiveness for relegation

goalkeeper Mycael was the first player in the Athletico to speak out on social media about the relegation to Series B. In a post on Instagram, the fans’ favorite apologized and spoke about the feeling after the fall.

“I couldn’t help but address our immense and passionate fans. I want to ask for forgiveness! Unfortunately, we couldn’t. What happened hurts and everyone knows that this is not our place”, he said.

In most comments, fans gave words of encouragement and gratitude.

At the age of 20, Mycael assumed ownership of the Red and Black goal and broke the ranks of the CT do Caju goalkeeper hierarchy. The young man took advantage of Léo Linck’s mistakes and was important for Athletico not to lose any more games.

A promise that has consolidated itself as Athletico’s highlight in this second semester, Mycael also said that he should stay at Furacão. He extended his contract with Furacão until the end of 2027, even though he entered the radar of teams in England, such as Manchester United.

“I will be here, working as I have always done since the first day to help put Hurricane back in its place. With a red and black heart and soul”, he declared.

Promise remembers his career at Athletico

Mycael also recalled his journey since arriving at Athletico, when he was 14 years old, in 2018. Born in Porto Velho, in Rondônia, he was discovered after a “premonition”.

“I’ve been at Athletico for almost a decade. I arrived as a teenager and grew up with the principles of honor and red-and-black tradition. The club is my home. Wearing the Athletico shirt as a professional has always been my goal. This year, I managed to achieve that dream and I am very grateful to everyone at the club”, he said.

With 49 call-ups to the Brazilian national team, the young goalkeeper is the record holder for the number of call-ups for the Brazilian national team’s youth teams. At the base, he stood out in the South American under-20 and Pan-American titles, both in 2023.

He had gala performances in this Brasileirão. This was the case of the 2-0 defeat against Palmeiras, in which he made more than five important interventions and avoided a historic defeat.. Another performance was in the goalless draw against Criciúma, which culminated in the dismissal of coach Martín Varini.

In the game that defined relegation, against Atlético-MG, Mycael saved the penalty taken by Hulk, but did not prevent Rubens’ goal from the rebound.

That way, Athletico sees potential for the promise to surpass, in numbers, the sale of Bento to Al Nassr, from Saudi Arabia. The deal was closed for 18 million euros (around R$107 million), making Bento the highest sale of a Brazilian goalkeeper in the history of football.

Before him, the position was held by goalkeeper Alisson, currently at Liverpool. In 2015, he accepted a transfer from Internacional to Roma, in Italy, for 8 million euros (R$36 million, at current prices).
